“Lance, I’m heading out now.”
Lorinda threw a look his way. “From now on, kid, you should start calling me Mom.”
Catherine nudged Lorinda toward the door, not letting her finish whatever was on her mind.
“You don’t need to come back again,” Catherine told her. “Go home and take care of Jasper.”
Lorinda leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. “No way. Even if I have to act like a fly and sneak through every obstacle, I’ll find a way to check in on you. Just wait for my message.”
At the end of the hallway, Harrell stood waiting.
Bodyguards lined the corridor, stiff as statues. None of them moved, but you could tell they were listening to every word.
There was really nothing more Lorinda could say, so she just left.
Still, it made her furious to think that Catherine had gone through labor with no one by her side. And that now, every day, Catherine had to drag herself around with a new baby, right under Lance’s nose. Lorinda could barely contain her anger.
When she reached Harrell, she just blurted it out. “You seriously must be out of your mind, messing around with someone like Lance!”
Harrell just stared at her, completely at a loss for words. It wasn’t his fault, but he could only watch as Lorinda stormed off.
Inside, Catherine quietly closed the door and walked over to Lance.
“Can I hold the baby?”
The little one was fast asleep in Lance’s arms. He had draped a thin cloth over the baby’s eyes and found a sunny spot by the window.
With Alexander White’s slight jaundice, Harrell had insisted he get at least half an hour of sunshine every day.
“I’ve got him,” Lance said. “Let him soak up the sun for a bit.”
He nodded at Catherine to relax and lie down.
Catherine sat on the edge of the bed and watched Lance with the baby beside her. There was this complicated tangle of emotion in her chest she couldn’t quite name.
Maybe it was something about blood ties, but to her surprise, Lance didn’t seem to mind holding the baby at all.
