Sybil had packed all her belongings the moment she got home. For three days, just as they had agreed, she maintained constant online communication with Carl.
But nearly a week had passed, and Carl kept claiming that some of his business deals in Metropia had hit a snag, forcing him to delay his departure.
Sybil texted him, begging him to at least buy her a plane ticket and give her the address to his estate so she could fly out first and wait for him there.
Once again, Carl rejected the idea, claiming his house was currently a mess and he didn't want her first impression of his home to be ruined.
Sybil was growing increasingly anxious and irritable. She desperately wanted to lash out at him, but knowing her entire future rested in his hands, she swallowed her rage, forcing herself to send pathetic, fawning messages as she waited.
Leroy suddenly opened her bedroom door. "Dad wants you to get dressed up tonight. There's a dinner party."
Sybil immediately tensed. "I'm not going! Why would I go to that?"
Leroy stood in the doorway for a long time before finally speaking up. "I have a friend taking a private jet to Larip tonight. He can take you with him. At least you can get out of the country and wait for the heat to die down."
"Why would I leave like that?" Sybil scoffed dismissively. "Even if I took a private jet, Mom and Dad would just drag me back. Besides, I'm staying here to wait for my boyfriend."
Leroy frowned, unable to hold back his frustration. "What was so wrong with Thane? Why couldn't you just make it work with him? Why are you obsessing over some shady, mysterious billionaire? What if this guy is just scamming you?"
Even though Leroy hadn't been on the cruise ship, their social circles were tight; he had already heard the whispers and rumors from others.
Hearing Thane's name brought a fleeting stab of guilt to Sybil's chest, but she remained aggressively defensive. "Does Thane have any redeeming qualities other than being young? He has nothing. All he had was a 'sincere heart.' Can a sincere heart put food on the table? Sincerity is the cheapest, most worthless thing in the world! How could a childish boy like him possibly compare to a mature, successful billionaire like Carl?"
Leroy was genuinely speechless. "Sybil, forget sincerity for a second. If you knew Thane was young, why didn't you realize that people need time to grow and mature? He just graduated college, how could he be a mature businessman already? You don't want to support him while he builds his future, but you still want his family's money? Life doesn't work that way. Don't you think you're being way too shallow?"
