“York,” Claudia greeted him, “I’m here to see Darleen.”

Without waiting for him to reply, she walked straight past him.

York turned, watching her back as she disappeared inside. He had been waiting at the door for nearly an hour after hearing she was coming, yet she hadn't paused for even a moment.

He silently averted his gaze and followed her into the living room.

When they entered, Claudia saw Old Mr. Ferguson and York’s father, Sewell. She hesitated, then offered a polite greeting, “Grandpa Ferguson, President Ferguson.”

Now that her engagement to York was a thing of the past, the two stubborn old men were no longer as hostile toward her. The Gideon's dad simply nodded in response.

Claudia didn't linger, heading straight upstairs to find Darleen.

As York watched her ascend the stairs, he instructed a servant, “Send two breakfasts upstairs.” He then added a specific reminder, “And bring two servings of the sweet porridge. Make sure it’s not too sweet.”

The servant hurried off.

Sewell watched his son’s eyes remain fixed on Claudia, his lovesick expression infuriating. “You insisted on marrying her when we told you not to, then you prepared the whole wedding only to call it off! I don't think you rejected her; it looks more like she rejected you! What a worthless fool. You're nothing like a son of mine!”

Ever since the wedding was canceled, York refused to date, go on blind dates, or consider any marriage alliances. Besides his mother and sister, he wouldn't even speak to an unfamiliar woman.
