That kind of courage was something most people could only dream of.
Still, Claudia offered a responsible reminder, “If you’re not planning on having kids yet, you have to use protection. An abortion is very hard on your body.”
Darleen nodded obediently. “Don’t worry, Claudia. Peter is always really careful about that. He doesn’t want to mess up my studies by having me get pregnant so early.”
She looked a little embarrassed. “It was just this one time… I was wearing a kind of short skirt, and Peter couldn’t control himself. We were in the car and didn’t have any protection, and then I forgot to take the morning-after pill.”
Claudia covered her face. “Darleen, is that something you should be telling people?”
Darleen teased, “Want to hear the details, Claudia?”
Claudia practically face-planted on the table. What a little minx.
After breakfast, Claudia was ready to head home, and Darleen walked her downstairs.
In the living room, the Harvest family had just arrived. When Ann saw the beautiful woman standing next to Darleen, a flash of jealousy crossed her eyes.
Why was such a stunning woman at the Ferguson estate?
Ann approached them and asked tentatively, “Miss Ferguson, and this is…?”
Darleen glanced at her brother and replied snidely, “Is my good friend bothering you?”
Ann breathed a sigh of relief. So she was just a friend of the family’s daughter.
With a plastered-on smile, Ann said, “You’re joking, Miss Ferguson. I just thought this young lady was very beautiful and wanted to make a new friend.”
Claudia stood silently beside Darleen, offering no introduction. She could tell Ann’s friendliness was fake, and she wanted nothing to do with her.
