The matriarch led Ann back to her room. Hearing the commotion, the three Harvest brothers came downstairs. When Fidelia saw her three older brothers and Jackie, she burst into even more heartbroken sobs.

Jackie pulled her little sister-in-law aside. “Fidelia, don’t cry. Tell me, who bullied you?”

“Jackie, brothers, I swear I didn’t hit that woman!” Fidelia cried. She held up her arm, pulling back her sleeve. “That woman is terrifying! She almost broke my wrist! Waaah…”

Everyone gathered around and saw the dark, ugly bruise circling Fidelia’s small wrist. They exchanged troubled glances.

Jackie, her heart aching for the girl, led Fidelia upstairs to apply some ointment.

Gideon's mom shot her husband a look. “Back to our room. I need to talk to you.”

The Gideon's dad obediently followed his wife.

The three Harvest brothers remained, their expressions grim.

Benton spoke first. “Kenny, has Grandma gone senile? Hitting our own Fidelia for some adopted girl?”

Gideon chimed in. “I’m fine with acknowledging her as family, but there’s no need for her to live with us. Kenny, why don’t you try to convince Mom, Dad, and Grandma to have her live somewhere else?”

Kenny sighed. “Our parents don’t have the final say in this matter. And I doubt Grandma would listen to me.”

The next morning, Ann accompanied the matriarch to the dining room for breakfast. The vast room was empty except for the two of them.

Ann stood beside the matriarch, her voice laced with bitter and hurt. “Grandma, you see? No one wants me to stay. Please, just let me go. Even if I live outside, I promise I’ll come back every day to take care of you.”

Last night, the matriarch had specifically announced that today’s breakfast would be the family’s first proper meal together and that everyone was to be on time. Yet, not a single one of them had shown up. Ann mentally recorded the humiliation. Sooner or later, she would make them pay for it, with interest.
