So what if they knew about her ‘dark past’? She was now, in name and in fact, a lady of the Harvest family. Their fates were intertwined; her honor was their honor, her disgrace was their disgrace. No matter how reluctant they were, they would have to cover for her and clean up her messes.
“What are you doing, skulking around like that?”
A sharp voice behind her made Ann jump and spin around. Fidelia stepped to where Ann had been standing and could clearly hear the conversation between her parents and grandmother through the slightly ajar door.
Fidelia pointed an accusing finger. “How dare you eavesdrop on my grandmother and my parents?”
Ann immediately denied it. “Fidelia, you should be careful with your words. I just got here. I was about to go in and talk to Grandma when you showed up.”
“You’re lying!” Fidelia shot back. “I saw you from down the hall, sneaking around and listening at the door. And you still dare to deny it!”
Ann retorted with righteous indignation, “Fidelia, I’m your older sister now. How can you speak to your sister with such a nasty tone?”
Fidelia pointed at Ann with disgust. “Everyone says you’re a bad woman. You are not my sister!”
A flicker of malice crossed Ann’s eyes. Glancing down the empty corridor, she grabbed Fidelia’s wrist and twisted it sharply.
Fidelia cried out in pain. “You wicked woman, let go of me!”
Ann lowered her voice to a menacing hiss. “Fidelia, you’d better learn to be polite to your older sister. Otherwise, you’re going to suffer.”
Fidelia, terrified by the look in Ann’s eyes, had tears welling up from the pain. Just as Ann heard movement from inside the room, she took Fidelia’s hand, slapped herself hard across the face with it, then let go and stumbled back, clutching her cheek.
Fidelia was young and had never encountered such a scheme. She could only point at Ann and shout, “You horrible woman!”
Just then, the matriarch and her son and daughter-in-law emerged from the room to witness the scene. Ann, face in her hands, scurried to the matriarch’s side and began to sob pitifully.
