Claudia's answers were crisp and immediate, without a trace of hesitation.
Darleen couldn't hold back her sobs.
"I know York wronged you," she cried, "and I know he doesn't deserve you. But we grew up together. I thought of you as family. My mom treated you like her own flesh and blood! She was the one who helped end your marriage to my brother, just to set you free!"
Darleen pointed a trembling finger at her own chest. "Even if York deserves the worst, what my mom and I feel for you is real! If not for me, then for my mother's sake... how could you stand by and watch, cold and indifferent, as York coughed up blood and collapsed in your office, and just do nothing?"
Faced with Darleen's raw accusation, Claudia lowered her gaze, hiding the emotion in her eyes.
After a brief, heavy silence, she explained, "Darleen, I called a doctor for him."
In the sterile hallway of the hospital, the two women, once as close as sisters who shared everything, stood staring at each other in silence.
Claudia's expression was a mix of sorrow and resignation.
Darleen's tears streamed down her face.
Her lower lip trembled as she finally managed to choke out, "Well, thank you for that."
Watching Darleen run, sobbing, into the elevator, Claudia turned away as her own vision blurred with tears.
She understood Darleen's pain. That was her brother, the one who had protected her since they were children. She treasured her sisterly bond with Darleen and the mother-daughter relationship she had with Wendy.
But she couldn't bring herself to have anything to do with York ever again.
