Claudia calmly and methodically broke free from York's desperate hold.
She turned to face him, not with anger or fury, but with an unnerving calm.
"You're right," she said, her voice steady. "You know we've known each other for over twenty years. And you know we were married for three. But didn't I still come second to your beloved Ann?"
After letting her words hang in the air, Claudia picked up the breakfast she'd dropped and walked out of the office without a backward glance.
York's body could no longer support him. He collapsed to the floor with a heavy thud.
Claudia heard the sound and paused in the hallway.
Moving quickly, she stopped two passing nurses. "There's a patient in my office who's unconscious from a severe gastric hemorrhage. Get a doctor and transfer him to the emergency room immediately."
Darleen, having just returned, arrived to see York being wheeled out of Claudia's office, unconscious, by a team of medical staff.
She also saw Claudia, standing a short distance away, holding a breakfast bag, watching but not approaching.
Darleen rushed into the office. She saw the uneaten breakfast her brother had bought for Claudia on the desk, and the stark, red stain of blood on the floor.
Sobbing, Darleen ran out of Claudia's office, chasing after the gurney as they rushed York to the ER.
She passed Claudia, her eyes red and swollen, and shot her a look of pure anguish, but said nothing.
Claudia watched until the elevator doors closed, then turned and walked away.
It was after eight o'clock that evening when York finally woke up in a hospital room.
He weakly scanned his surroundings. His parents and sister were all there, but there was no sign of Claudia.
He let his gaze drift away, staring blankly at the ceiling tiles.
