Claudia changed her clothes and came out of her room to find York's parents already waiting in the living room.
Sewell kept his head down, silent, all the arrogant fire he’d shown on his last visit to the Watkins family completely gone.
When Wendy saw Claudia, it was as if she were seeing a savior. She grabbed Claudia’s hand, her eyes red-rimmed.
Claudia felt Wendy’s hands trembling in her grasp and could sense the panic and fear churning inside her.
Unable to bear it, Claudia tried to soothe her. "Aunt Wendy, take your time. There's no rush. Just tell me what's wrong."
Wendy shook her head in disbelief. "Claudia, I know it's incredibly rude of us to come here in the middle of the night, but we had no other choice."
As she spoke, her voice choked with sobs. "York has been hiding his illness, pretending to be on business trips abroad. This morning, his sister found him coughing up blood, about to collapse in his room. If Darleen hadn't called us, we would have thought he was almost recovered!"
Wendy hunched over, pleading with Claudia. "Claudia, he won't listen to anyone now, so we can only beg you. Please, talk to him. If this goes on, he's going to kill himself!"
Claudia helped Wendy to the sofa.
She tried to comfort her, saying, "Aunt Wendy, his life is his own. If he truly wants to die, no one can stop him. I can't help you with this."
Wendy looked at Claudia, feeling both helpless and desperate.
She cast a pleading gaze toward Claudia's parents.
Claudia's parents stood in the living room, their expressions grim. As parents themselves, Wendy's tears had softened their hearts.
Jessica Stone spoke with a sigh of resignation. "Mrs. Ferguson, my daughter's stance is our stance."
Wendy's eyes, red and tear-filled, turned to her husband, Sewell, with a look of resentment.
Sewell walked to the center of the living room. He straightened his suit jacket, then bent at the waist to first apologize to Claudia's parents.
