Claudia looked at her parents.
Felix and Jessica stepped forward and helped Sewell to his feet.
"Whether he lives or dies has nothing to do with me anymore," Claudia said, her voice unnervingly calm. "I really can't help you."
She turned and went back to her room, locking the door behind her.
York was a master calculator, a businessman who put profit above all else. He was selfish and cold-hearted. How could a man like that possibly do something so irrational?
After Claudia's parents managed to send York's parents away, they returned to find Claudia back in the living room.
Jessica looked at her daughter with concern. "Claudia, no matter what you decide, your father and I will support you."
Claudia, in turn, spent some time comforting her parents.
Older people tended to be more sentimental. They had watched York grow up. Though they hated him now, they had once invested genuine affection in him, and it was impossible for their hearts not to be moved at all.
But her own resolve was firm.
She had wasted the best years of her youth on York. Because of his betrayal and heartlessness, she had barely survived that dark period and had almost considered taking her own life.
Their connection had long been severed. She never owed him a thing.
Despite this, no one in the Watkins household was able to sleep for the rest of the night.
Two days later, in the evening, Peter came to find Claudia at her office.
Claudia poured him a glass of water. "Peter, if you're here to try and persuade me, you might as well not say a word."
Peter sat on the sofa, his long, slender fingers slowly turning the glass in his hands.
He studied Claudia's expression for a long moment before he couldn't help but speak.
