"Mr. Ferguson," Hugh said, "do you know why Dr. Watkins won't forgive you?"

York lowered his gaze, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides.

"Once is a mistake," Hugh continued. "Twice is a choice. A deliberate act of harm doesn't deserve forgiveness."

York's voice was a hoarse, trembling whisper. "Did... did she tell you all this?"

"One night, Dr. Watkins had a bit too much to drink," Hugh said. "She told me something, through her tears."

He paused, then went on. "She said that when she first found out you were cheating, she tried to win you back. But your indifference made her every effort feel cheap. Then, when she tried to use suicide as a last resort to make you turn back to her, and you met her with contempt... she said that in that moment, she felt completely and utterly worthless."

York braced his hands on the window frame, squeezing his eyes shut in agony.

"When you truly love someone," Hugh said, his voice steady and calm, "you can't help but be soft with them. You instinctively bend for them, lower yourself for them. You're constantly giving them strength, giving them security, being their support."

York didn't know how he made it out of the hospital.
