Claudia could tell from York's expression that he had something to say.

But after entering the bedroom, he only glanced at her before heading straight for the bathroom.

Listening to the sound of the shower running, Claudia found she could no longer focus on the book in her hands.

She closed her laptop, stacked her books neatly on the nightstand, and leaned back against the pillows, waiting quietly for him to come out.

It had always been York's habit to shower immediately upon returning home.

At some point, that habit had become hers as well.

She loved the scent of him, loved falling asleep in his arms.

During her happiest moments, she had told him that she loved him so much she would die of a broken heart if he didn't hold her every night.

Since the day she discovered his affair, she had spent nearly every night alone, sleepless and tormented.

And yet, she was still alive.

See? No one in this world is truly indispensable to anyone else.

Even though she loved him to death, she could endure the pain with clear-eyed resolve while planning her escape.

When York emerged from the bathroom in a set of dark pajamas, Claudia was staring blankly into space.

His gaze fell on the stack of study materials on the nightstand, and he casually flipped through them.

He sat down on the edge of the bed, his tone unreadable. "Why the sudden interest in medical books again?"

Claudia didn't answer.

York reached out, tucking a loose strand of her hair behind her ear. "Should I have someone find you an easier position?"

Claudia shook her head. "My parents have moved out of the downtown apartment. They've had it professionally cleaned. The door code is the same. They wanted me to let you know that you can take the property back."

York's expression didn't change. "Where did they move?"

"To a place on Riverside Drive," Claudia answered honestly. "It's close to the factory where my dad works."

York's eyes narrowed slightly. "Claudia, I am the heir to the Ferguson Group. Do you think it's appropriate for my in-laws to live in subsidized housing?"
