Ann's nails dug deep into her palms.
Everything she wore, owned, and consumed was a gift from York.
Besides, the Fergusons surely knew about her background from when she dated York six years ago.
Darleen's question was a deliberate slap in the face.
Ann held back her anger, responding graciously, "Thank you, Miss Ferguson. But I'm just an ordinary girl."
Darleen crossed her arms, drawing out her words with mock curiosity. "Then your in-laws must be very wealthy. Which prominent family did you marry into? I might even know them."
Ann glanced at Claudia, her face now visibly strained. "Miss Ferguson, I'm not married."
Claudia swayed, nearly losing her balance.
Ann was not married, yet she had a five-year-old son.
There was no doubt. The child was York's.
Darleen gave Ann a thumbs-up. "You must be incredibly capable. What do you do for a living, Miss James? Let's be friends. I truly admire strong women like you—the kind who earn their own money, live by their own means, and refuse to be parasites on men."
Humiliation washed over Ann. She stole a glance at Claudia before quickly looking away.
"Miss Ferguson," Ann muttered, her head down, "I have something to attend to, so I'll be going now."
Before she had even finished speaking, she was inside the elevator.
Darleen was about to chase after her but was stopped by Claudia.
Darleen stomped her foot in frustration. "Claudia, I haven't even slapped her yet!"
Claudia, pale-faced, pulled Darleen to a deserted corner.
"Darleen, I know you're doing this for me," she said, trying to reason with her, "but even if you slapped her senseless, it wouldn't change the fact that she and your brother are back together. Your brother loves her and their child so much. If he found out, he'd be hurt and angry. Please, don't make things worse."
Darleen took Claudia's hand, her eyes filled with a cautious concern. "Claudia… are you giving up on my brother?"
In the past, whenever another woman appeared near her brother, Claudia would go on high alert, doing everything in her power to drive them away.
