Linda frowned slightly. "I don't know what's going on with that kid, but he's been borrowing money from colleagues at the company. He seemed really desperate, so I lent him some."
I was a bit taken aback. Jacob was hardworking, diligent, and a quick learner. Although he hadn't been with the company long, Myron's company paid well, so his salary wasn't low.
For him to be in such urgent need of money, something serious must have happened.
What I found strange, however, was why he hadn't messaged me. He had to know I was better off financially than most of our colleagues.
"How much did he borrow?" I asked.
Linda shook her head. "I'm not sure, probably a few thousand dollars in total. I heard from others that it's for surgery, so maybe something happened to his family."
I frowned, a possibility suddenly flashing through my mind. Jacob was borrowing it for Verna. Her hand was injured and needed surgery.
No wonder he hadn't asked me. He knew about the bad blood between Verna and me.
It was clear that Jacob truly cared for Verna. Even if he didn't approve of her actions, he couldn't stand by and do nothing when she was in trouble.
I couldn't fault him for his kindness. What I found strange and almost laughable was Verna's audacity—looking down on Jacob one minute and then turning to him for help the next.
And she still had the nerve to call herself the star of the show. So, her idea of being the leading lady was clinging to men? When Steven gave her things, she was on top of the world, but the moment he cut her off, she became completely useless.
That wasn't the role of a heroine; that was the role of a side character.
What I didn't understand was why Thomas hadn't helped Verna. Wasn't he her devoted lapdog?
Linda tapped my arm. "Hey, what are you thinking about?"
I snapped back to reality. "Nothing!"
