The moment the thought surfaced, I immediately dismissed it.
It was too absurd. After all, if the Steven from my past life had truly cared about those little details, why would he have been so cold and distant?
I quickly composed myself, washed up, and went downstairs.
Hearing me, Steven came out of the kitchen, his gaze soft. “Go ahead and sit down. Breakfast is almost ready.”
I murmured an acknowledgment and walked into the dining room. Just as I sat down, I heard arguing outside the front door. The voices grew louder, and one of them sounded very familiar.
I got up and walked to the door, with Steven right behind me.
There was Myron, flanked by two tall, imposing men who were holding him by the arms. They were dressed in sharp suits but had the unmistakable air of bodyguards.
The moment he saw me, Myron's eyes lit up. “Zephyra, tell them to let me go! They’re about to twist my arms off!”
I gave a helpless smile; how could I possibly intervene? I didn't even know who these men were. Myron continued to wail, drawing stares from passersby.
Steven's cold voice rang out from behind me. “Let him go!”
I paused, suddenly remembering Steven's confident assertion that I couldn't run away. So he really did have bodyguards.
I was suddenly very glad I hadn't tried to escape, or I'd have ended up in the same predicament.
The bodyguards hesitated for a moment before finally releasing Myron.
He rubbed his sore arms and shot me a resentful glare, a perfect picture of someone who bullies the weak and fears the strong.
I glared right back, cursing him under my breath.
For some reason, Steven's expression had darkened considerably. He clearly wasn't happy to see Myron.
He pushed the door open and gestured for me to go inside. Myron trailed behind us like a lackey.
At the breakfast table, Steven's tone with Myron was lukewarm. “What are you doing here?”
Myron put on a cheeky grin. “I heard Zephyra was out of the hospital, so I came to see how she was doing.”
Steven glanced up at him. “You've seen her. Now get out.”
Myron looked exasperated, trying to buy more time. “Steven, at least let me catch my breath before I go.” He then turned to me. “Right, Zephyra?”
