I looked at Steven. I wasn’t angry, just confused.
Before I could even ask, he began to explain. Because I used to dislike him, my grandfather’s family disliked him too, which was why he’d never brought them up.
Besides, my grandfather really was in poor health. Leonard had to stay abroad to handle some business, and the family had lost some of its key resources to a competitor. Telling them about my amnesia would just be piling bad news on top of bad news.
I frowned. “But if the family’s in trouble, shouldn’t I help? Even with amnesia, I can still be useful. Who poached Leonard’s resources? I’ll go give them a piece of my mind.”
He raised an eyebrow, a slight smile playing on his lips. “Horace did. Are you going to give him a piece of your mind?”
I was stunned. “But isn’t he a singer? What kind of resources would he be stealing?”
“And you think being a singer is all he is?” Steven sneered, his entire demeanor turning cold and derisive at the mention of Horace. “He hides behind you, playing the innocent victim, but in reality, he’s far more capable than you think. Only a fool like you would fall for his manipulative act and defend him against me.”
Even though I didn’t remember our past conflicts, his jealousy was practically dripping from his words.
I almost laughed, but being scolded for no reason made me pout. “I really don’t remember anything. You’re a grown man, why do you keep holding the past against me? If he stole from Leonard, then… then of course I’ll confront him. But what else can I do? Maybe I should go home and talk it over with my grandfather?”
Steven looked down at me. “Wouldn’t it be faster to ask for my help?”
That was true. Steven was powerful and wealthy. A businessman dealing with another businessman would surely resolve things faster than I could.
I looked at his handsome, composed face, so close to mine. “Will you help?”
His reply was soft and simple. “You have to ask.”
I wrapped my arms around his neck, coaxing him in a soft voice. “Then please, will you help me? Please?”
Steven stared intently into my eyes, then leaned his face closer. I eagerly kissed his cheek, and a small smile touched his lips. “Alright. I’ll handle it for you.”
Seeing Steven’s composed, gentlemanly demeanor, I suddenly remembered that Horace was his rival for my affection. I also recalled the restrained madness I’d seen in him when we first met. “Don’t use this as an excuse for personal revenge,” I added quickly. “Just get our company’s operations back to normal. Let’s all try to move on and live peacefully without causing more trouble, okay?”
When he looked slightly displeased, I quickly tried to appease him, kissing and hugging him. His throat bobbed, and he lowered his head to kiss me back, his eyes closing to hide the icy glint within. After a long moment, he gave a soft hum of agreement.
He had consented.
I was discovering he could be quite reasonable. He took out a pink ring and bracelet and placed them on my hand. I loved the ring but was also terrified of it. I didn’t dare wear it.
I was so exhausted that I slept until the afternoon the next day.
I had no idea that my brother and Uncle Julian had gone to Steven’s company to demand my return.
After getting a call from Gordon, Steven had his family invited to a private room at a restaurant, where he went to handle the situation personally.
Julian Lopez demanded he let me go. Steven refused and brought up how Horace had poached their company’s clients.
Ryan Lopez clenched his fists. “That was a gift from Leonard to my future brother-in-law! It was a test for him to pass before marrying my sister. You don’t know what you’re talking about. My future brother-in-law would never do anything to hurt Zephyra!”
Steven’s face was as cold as ice. “Is that so?”
Julian said, “Mr. Lancaster, let’s not talk business. Whatever issues Horace has with the Lopez family, that’s between us. We know what happened to Zephyra, and today, we’re here to take her home.”
Steven let out a small laugh. Ryan shot to his feet, furious. “What are you laughing at? My brother-in-law told me everything! You’re taking advantage of Zephyra’s amnesia and feeding her lies! My sister hates you! She may not remember now, but I won’t let her make the same mistake twice. You two are divorced. We, her uncle and I, are her family. If you don’t give her back, we’ll call the police!”
“And if the police can’t do anything, I’ll find people to trash your house and disrupt your company until you can’t function! We will stop at nothing to get her back. Try us if you don’t believe me—”
