If it hadn’t been for the accident, for Steven risking his life to protect me, I never would have made such a promise to him.
There were just too many doubts, too many obstacles.
Steven’s expression softened, the hard lines of his jaw relaxing. “That’s not for you to worry about. I’m here. I’ll solve whatever problems come our way. All you need to do is stay by my side and be with me.”
With him saying that, I had no room to refuse.
Besides, the thought of getting back together… while it was an impulse born from a harrowing situation, it was also what I genuinely felt.
I just couldn’t tell if it was the suspension bridge effect or… if I had actually fallen for him.
I looked at Steven and nodded obediently.
“Okay. I’ll stay by your side. I’ll be with you. I won’t go anywhere.”
He seemed slightly taken aback, as if he hadn’t expected me to be so compliant. His heart suddenly hammered in his chest, and a wave of quiet, intense joy washed over him. His thickly bandaged hand trembled slightly, but he kept his expression neutral.
“Zephyra, you need to remember what you said to me today. Even when you get your memory back, you have to remember this,” he said, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Come here. Let me kiss you.”
My face instantly burned. I couldn’t believe how quickly his thoughts jumped. What was going on in that head of his?
“You… you’re injured. You should probably hold back.”
“We’re back together, and you won’t even give me a kiss?” Steven glanced down at his hands, his thin lips pressed into a tight line. His pale face looked even more fragile under the fluorescent lights. “You find me repulsive now that I’m injured and ugly?”
“No, I don’t! It’s just…” I stammered.
He stared at me, making it clear he wouldn’t take no for an answer. I bit my lip, steeled myself, and leaned in, pressing a quick kiss to the corner of his mouth.
I pulled back immediately, my face crimson. When it came to this kind of intimacy, I was all talk and no action. “I’m sleepy,” I mumbled, my voice barely a whisper. “I want to take a shower and go to bed.”
The corners of Steven’s mouth lifted into a smile he couldn’t suppress. His features relaxed, and he shifted over in the bed.
I often felt a sense of shame, but Steven was completely nonchalant about it. “We’re back together. You’re my woman. What’s wrong with exercising my rights as your boyfriend?”
I had no rebuttal, because he let me exercise my rights, too. He was always willing, though he said we had to wait for certain things. His injuries were severe this time, so he couldn’t perform just yet.
But there were other ways to satisfy me.
I just…
I just wanted to cover his mouth and tell him to shut up.
And Steven was terrible at keeping secrets. Anyone who came to visit and asked, he would hold my hand and announce that we were back together, and that I had initiated it.
Gordon and Mr. Lancaster Sr. were surprised at first, then delighted. Myron, for once, said nothing. His gaze kept flicking to me, and after a long silence, he warned Steven.
“Her being willing now means nothing. She’ll get her memory back eventually. As long as you don’t regret it, Steven—”
