I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 681

The lively chatter in the room instantly died down.

I froze, turning back to see Gordon and Mr. Lancaster Sr. trying to hide their amusement. Myron stood with his arms crossed, his expression displeased, but he said nothing.

Steven’s handsome face was pale, his lips cracked and bluish, a clear sign he was drained of all energy and incredibly weak.

“I…”

He cut me off with a frown. “Why are you in a wheelchair? Are you hurt?”

Gordon answered for me. “Mr. Lancaster, didn’t I just tell you that Ma’am wasn’t seriously injured? She’s in the wheelchair because she carried you up the mountain. It took a lot out of her, and she still hasn’t recovered.”

Mr. Lancaster Sr. looked at me, surprised, then his eyes filled with genuine admiration.

“Well done, little lady. I always knew you were the best of them. You rascal, you’d better thank your lifesaver!”

I quickly explained, “He protected me. He’s my lifesaver.”

Mr. Lancaster Sr. laughed heartily. “Then you’re each other’s saviors! In a moment of crisis, neither of you abandoned the other. I’m so happy, truly happy. And Zephyra, you did this even with your memory gone. To be so good to him despite everything… you two are simply meant to be!”

Gordon chimed in with a smile, while Myron’s eyes flickered, but he remained silent.

I bit my lip, feeling a pang of guilt, and didn’t dare say another word.

Soon enough, they all filed out, leaving Steven and me alone.

Gordon had wanted to say more to Steven, but Mr. Lancaster Sr. pulled him away, giving him a look that said he had no sense of occasion.

Steven leaned back against the headboard, his deep-set eyes locked on my face. His voice was a low growl.

Meeting his dark, intense gaze, my heart skipped a beat, and I quickly looked away. “You… weren’t you unconscious then? How could you know what I was saying?”

Steven’s heart stirred, his throat suddenly dry. “Yes, I wasn’t completely out. I just couldn’t speak. But I know everything you said and did.”

I thought about how I’d been sobbing, begging him not to die, and crying about how we could get back together. A hot flush crept up my cheeks, and I couldn't bring myself to look at him.

“Well… that was just because I was really scared you were going to die. That’s why I said it.”

He narrowed his eyes. “Zephyra, a person should keep their word. You said if we were rescued, you’d get back together with me. I believed you, and I survived. Are you telling me now that you were just bluffing?”

My head drooped lower as I fiddled with the corner of the blanket. “It… it wasn’t entirely a bluff. But it seems like your friends and family really don’t like me. I hurt you and your family so much in the past… getting back together… I’m afraid it will be full of difficulties and cause you a lot of unnecessary trouble.”

The more I interacted with his circle, the more I realized how severe the conflicts were between us. From his assistant to his friends to his family, almost everyone had a problem with me. And the only friend of mine who had shown up, Horace, also said that Steven and I had a bad relationship.
