Perhaps I had been through too many shocks today, because when I heard that Steven had a mistress, cheated on me, and had taken me by force, I didn't feel as stunned as I should have.
My nerves were numb. I clutched the ice cream in my hand, my face a mask of confusion, bewilderment, and unease. I was almost robotic.
Everyone here seemed to know something about my life, but I, the person in question, knew nothing at all.
I couldn't believe Steven had hidden so much from me.
He hid his affair, he hid the fact that I had a fiancé, he hid the reason for our divorce, and he hid how we had ended up in this situation.
Our problems weren't just a simple marital dispute.
I turned to look at Steven. The ice cream felt as heavy as my heart. My lips trembled as I asked a question that had been puzzling me.
"My amnesia was deliberate... so... was my car crash really an accident? Has anyone investigated what really happened with that bridge?"
My voice was soft, a simple question born of confusion, not an accusation demanding an answer.
But the air suddenly froze, becoming incredibly tense.
George was dumbfounded, not expecting that my amnesia was intentional. So what was the real story behind the bridge collapse?
Horace's expression changed, and he frowned at Steven.
"Steven, you took her by force, forcing her to stay with you. We were only fighting back reasonably, and you harmed her to this extent?"
Steven's gaze was as sharp as a knife, first shooting towards Horace, then lowering to lock onto my eyes.
"You think I tried to kill you?"
I stared blankly at Steven. I had entertained that small suspicion. Although everyone had a different story, they all agreed that my relationship with Steven was terrible, that I hated him and had ruined him financially.
They say ruining someone's finances is an unforgivable offense. It was perfectly logical that he would hate me and want revenge after I had succeeded and was ready to move on.
Besides, my amnesia was deliberately caused.
What looked like an accidental car crash might not have been an accident at all.
Seeing my expression, Steven, who had been composed, suddenly grew grim. He laughed, but there was no humor in it.
I looked at Horace. His nervousness and worry were plain to see.
Honestly, his attitude towards me was the complete opposite of Steven's.
I could feel his concern and how much he valued me.
But in the end, I went back to the hotel.
For one simple reason.
Horace was a total stranger. I'd at least had some interaction with Steven. Moreover, I hadn't verified any of Horace's claims, so I couldn't just leave with him.
Besides, I was curious to hear what answers Steven had for me, what he could possibly explain.
I went back to the guesthouse first and knocked directly on Gordon's door. He looked surprised as I held out my hand. "Can I borrow your phone?"
Gordon didn't hesitate, handing it over. I took it and started searching. Horace's name came to mind; my intuition told me it had to be his. I asked casually.
