Steven was in his loungewear when a soft, warm body crashed into his. His body went rigid, and he instinctively raised his arms to catch me. I was trembling in his embrace, shaking with fear.
He frowned.
"Rats?"
"Yes, rats! They just appeared while I was showering… There were two of them, and they were so big and horrible," I said, shivering uncontrollably, completely lost in my terror. "One of them crawled on my foot… It was warm, and it looked like it wanted to bite me… I kicked it away…"
Though I had no memories of my past, I was absolutely petrified of those things. But I was also afraid Steven would think I was being dramatic. I bit my lip and held onto his waist for dear life.
"Steven, can you… please don't make me leave just yet? I… I might not be so scared of other things, but I'm really, really scared of rats…"
At first, it was just the shock of something scurrying out. But the slimy feeling of the rat on my leg sent me into a full-blown panic. It was a fear I couldn't control no matter how hard I tried. If Steven sent me back to my room now, I would definitely burst into tears.
Steven's frown deepened, but he didn't dismiss my words.
"I know," he said, his gaze falling on my pale, trembling shoulders. His eyes darkened, and his Adam's apple bobbed. Finally, he pulled me away. "Let go. I'll get you some clothes."
Only then did I realize I was completely naked, with water still dripping from my shoulders.
I hadn't had time to dry off, and I had soaked a large patch of his gray loungewear. And his hand was supporting my…
My face flushed crimson. It looked exactly like I was trying to seduce him. I lowered my head, unable to meet his eyes but too scared to let go. "I was in a hurry… I didn't do it on purpose," I whispered.
He glanced at me. "Isn't this enough of a mess? And stop using that voice with me."
"Huh?"
I was speaking normally. Before I could figure out what other mess I had caused, he had lifted me and placed me on his bed, then strode into my room.
I quickly wrapped myself in the duvet and peeked out to see him scanning my room. Then, he closed the door and returned with my pajamas, tossing them in front of me.
"The rats are gone. These clothes are from your suitcase; they're clean."
I scrambled to put them on, but when I looked at the foot the rat had touched, I couldn't help but shudder.
"Why?" I asked curiously. "Did you know I was afraid of rats before?"
His expression shifted, his eyes dark and deep. "You were once locked in a dark room and forced to live with rats. They liked to come out when you were sleeping and would crawl into your clothes. That's why you're afraid."
I was stunned again.
No wonder I was so terrified. But how could that be? I thought my family was well-off. "Who would do that to me? Was it my family?"
Steven's eyes turned cold. That was from the first lifetime. He never thought that even without those memories, her instincts would remain. "That person has been dealt with. They can't hurt you anymore. Don't dig into it; it won't do you any good."
He placed me back on the bed and started drying my hair with a towel. His movements weren't gentle, and my head bobbed around under his rough ministrations.
"Oh." Gathering my courage, I tugged on his sleeve and looked up at him with bright eyes. "Honey… can I sleep in your room tonight?"
He shot me a cold look. I flinched and quickly changed my tune. "That room has rats, I don't dare go back. And I'm scared to sleep alone. If… if you really don't want to see me, then… can you lend me Gordon? I could sleep in his room."
