"Daniel." The thug answered every question now, not daring to run. "Miss, honestly, we were just trying to scare you. We didn't plan on doing anything else. We figured if we yelled at a young girl like you a few times, you'd just leave Sol."
"Yeah! The boss is telling the truth! Who knew you'd just beat the crap out of us without a word?"
This was the most ridiculous thing that had happened to them in all their years on the streets.
Rosalind had heard enough. Her voice was light. "You did indeed scare me. So you'll need to pay for my emotional distress."
The thugs: Who scared who?! They were the ones with bruised faces and broken bones!!!
Rosalind smiled. "What? You don't want to pay? Fine. I'll call the police, and you'll all get a criminal record."
"No, no, no!" Daniel held up a hand, wincing in pain. "Miss, we'll pay! Just tell us how much. We'll pool our money. Worst case, we'll give you everything we got for this job!"
Rosalind's tone was indifferent. "I'm not interested in your money. Since you've disturbed my life, you can make up for it by doing a good deed. From now on, you're responsible for the security of Tulip Lane. If I see anyone else causing trouble here, I'll come looking for you."
"No problem! We live right around here!" one of the younger thugs blurted out, slapping his chest and revealing their location.
Daniel had never seen someone so stupid, but what could he do? It was his guy.
"We'll do as you say." Providing protection was easy enough, and it beat taking on shady jobs.
But Rosalind looked up, shattering his illusion. "And stop taking those jobs. Give me your account and the app you're using. I need to know who wants me out of Sol."
So after all that, this was her real goal!
Daniel thought for a moment, then gritted his teeth. "Miss, you must understand the rules of this business. We can't just give out the account information."
Rosalind smiled faintly. "How would I know? I'm not a criminal."
The young thug lowered his voice. "You didn't look like a good guy. It seemed like you were about to attack us."
Warner touched the scarlet bracelet on his wrist and coughed softly, his eyes fixed on Rosalind. His face was pale, his features handsome, and his eyes held a strange mix of amusement and grievance.
Just a little while ago, a certain Ms. Martinez had pulled the same act, and Rosalind had found it manipulative. But seeing it from her patient, she just thought the young thug must have terrible eyesight.
The young thug realized the warrior-miss was going to protect her boyfriend and took a step back.
Rosalind didn't say anything, just looked at Daniel. "So? The account. Are you giving it to me or not?"
Daniel was clearly conflicted. His crew depended on him. If he gave up the account, what would happen to them...?
"That one..." Rosalind tilted her chin. "He's not even an adult, is he? Built sturdy, though. And that one, with the limp. Are you going to keep dragging them into this illegal business?"
