Rosalind looked at the mark on his neck and smiled, raising an eyebrow. "I asked you before I bit you. It was to cover your medical fees. What responsibility is there to take?"
"I can pay," Warner's voice was a bit hoarse, likely from a cold. When he chuckled, his breath was heavy against her ear. "Taking responsibility will make it more convenient for you to bite me next time."
Rosalind was somewhat tempted. Her hair framed her sharp features. "I'll think about it."
"Think it over carefully. It's not just you who needs a boyfriend." Warner seemed to be laughing softly. "My family is pressuring me too."
Rosalind raised an eyebrow. "Then why did you break off the engagement?"
She hadn't forgotten what she'd overheard at the hospital.
Warner's voice was light and drawn out. "I should at least have the right to choose my own bride. With my health, would you have someone marry me just to live like a widow?"
"True." Rosalind nodded seriously, her beautiful face earnest.
Warner let out a low, somewhat helpless laugh. "I wasn't asking for an answer."
What did she mean, true? It was just a way to humor her.
But there was one thing Warner had been completely honest about from the start.
Choosing his bride was his right.
He would make proper arrangements for the Martinez family.
If the old man hadn't, in a drunken stupor, believed an old wives' tale that the person who could cleanse him of his heavy karma was in the Martinez family, this engagement would never have happened in the first place.
He had just turned one, and they had arranged it for him without even knowing if the Martinez family had a daughter.
