Rosalind looked at the dated booklet and said, “Grandma, I have money.”
“You used to, but now that you’ve been kicked out, that family even canceled your credit cards.” Grandma Megan stroked her long hair. “You’re just trying to make me happy.”
Rosalind’s smile didn’t fade. “Grandma, I…”
Before Rosalind could explain, her grandma’s cellphone started ringing, shrill and piercing.
Grandma Megan glanced at the caller ID, and the warmth in her eyes vanished. She started to get up, wanting to take the call away from the children.
Rosalind was sharp. “Is it Rachel?”
Seeing she couldn't hide it, Megan simply nodded.
Rosalind smiled faintly. “Go ahead and answer it, Grandma. Galeno and I are grown up now. Whatever it is, we’ll face it with you.”
Hearing her granddaughter’s words gave Megan a surge of warmth and strength. She answered the call she had been dreading.
“Well, well, you finally decided to answer my call. Anyone who didn't know better would think I was a terrible daughter-in-law who doesn't look after you.”
Rachel’s sharp, spiteful voice came through the phone. “The Zade family just contacted me. They said you tried to borrow money from them to reopen your clinic and asked if I would lend it to you.”
Rachel sneered. “Mom, have you forgotten that you once killed a patient with your incompetence?”
Megan’s fingers began to tremble, her voice low. “That has nothing to do with you.”
“Nothing to do with me?” Rachel fumed. “Are you pulling strings for that imposter? You’re hilarious, old woman. You won’t help your own flesh-and-blood granddaughter, but you’ll help a fake!”
With that, Rachel hung up, furious.
She was utterly contemptuous. As long as she forbade it, no one would dare lend a cent to that old hag!
She’d just wait and see how two beggars were going to reopen Veritas Medical.
In the courtyard, the old woman had steadied her trembling hands and set aside her simple mobile phone. "Don't you worry about the money. Grandma will figure something out. I won't let you miss out on school."
No sooner had she spoken than a message came through.
It was from the Zades, apologizing profusely and explaining that times were tight—they simply couldn't spare the funds right now...
