Jonathan sneered. He wondered what might happen next.
Janice shrugged, "Anyway, I like Estelle a lot."
Jonathan, wearing a grey shirt and one hand in his pocket, looked refined and handsome. He casually said, "Shouldn't we ask Estelle what she thinks about it?"
"Of course," Janice said. "I've already arranged for them to meet in the study. They've been in there for almost an hour now, so it seems like everything should be fine."
Jonathan's eyes darkened a bit, his expression inscrutable. He glanced at the cake decoration on the table and asked, "Is this supposed to go on the cake?"
"Oh, right! I almost forgot. I'll bring it over now!" Janice picked up the decoration and walked out of the room.
Once Janice had left, Jonathan's gaze quickly swept over the study on the second floor before striding upstairs.
Reaching the study, he didn't bother knocking and simply pushed the door open with a look of disappointment on his face.
Matthew was discussing the novel with Estelle. He leaned over slightly, listening intently to her explanation with a humble expression on his face.
From Jonathan's perspective, Matthew's hand rested on the back of Estelle's chair, almost looming over her entirely.
The door to the study was silent, and the two were so focused on their conversation that they didn't even notice someone had entered.
Jonathan knocked on the door, his tone cold. "Excuse me, I didn’t know someone was in here!"
Startled, Matthew stood up straight at the sound of Jonathan's voice. "Uncle!"
Estelle glanced at the man and quickly averted her eyes.
"Yes!"
During their small talk, Estelle kept her head down, pretending to focus on her book.
Catching a glimpse of her out of the corner of his eye, Jonathan said in a mild tone, "My sister-in-law has moved the cake outside. Don't you need to prepare Henson's gift in advance?"
"Yes, I've made a special firework, and I need to set it up under the cake cart ahead of time." Matthew turned apologetically to Estelle. "I'll be back in a moment. We can continue our discussion when I return."
"Okay," Estelle nodded.
After exchanging a few more words with Jonathan, Matthew walked out of the study.
As soon as he was gone, the atmosphere in the room suddenly became awkward and strained. It was made even more uncomfortable by the fact that this was a place filled with shared memories between the two.
