She always prided herself on her strength of mind. Back then, it was only her determination to find Jonathan that rekindled her hope for life. But Sylvia—how did she manage to move on so gracefully, always smiling in front of others as if nothing could touch her?
Sylvia was even stronger than she was.
That’s why she had no right to blame Sylvia for letting go of her brother, or for choosing Eugene instead.
Her brother was her whole world. The endless, hopeless waiting could crush her expectations for life itself.
Just like last time, when he left—she’d almost lost the will to go on.
She could only survive that kind of pain once. There wouldn’t be a second time.
So she completely understood the choice Sylvia was making now.
“I get it now, thanks to you,” Magdalen said, raising an eyebrow and sighing as she glanced back. “Don’t worry, Sylvia is still my friend. And the next time I see Mr. Winters, I’ll play nice.”
“Alright.”
Estelle’s phone started ringing before she could answer; Magdalen scoffed, “I told him you’d be home in half an hour. Why’s he calling already?”
Estelle smiled and swiped to answer. “Jonathan.”
“Still not home?” Jonathan sounded annoyed. “Where did Magdalen drag you off to this time?”
“Nowhere, really,” Estelle replied with a light laugh. “There was just a bit of traffic. I’ll be home soon.”
Jonathan’s tone eased. “I’ll go shower first. Hurry back.”
Estelle murmured her agreement and hung up.
Magdalen snorted. “What, does he think I’d lose you somewhere? I knew you first, and now we have to get his blessing just to hang out?”
Estelle looked over her shoulder. “Oh, come on, Ms. Sampson—be the bigger person. Don’t let him get under your skin.”
Magdalen huffed. “So tell me, who do you love more, me or Jonathan?”
Estelle hesitated, then turned her gaze to the night beyond the car window. “The moon looks so full tonight.”
Magdalen burst out laughing. “Nice try—could you at least pretend to be sincere? It’s overcast. There’s no moon tonight!”
