Two days later, Sylvia was fully recovered and discharged from the hospital.
Eugene drove her home. He’d already arranged for a cleaning service to tidy up her apartment, so when they walked in, everything felt fresh and welcoming. He placed a bouquet of flowers in a vase and smiled warmly. “Why don’t you take a shower and relax for a bit? Then we’ll go out for dinner and properly celebrate your recovery.”
Sylvia gave a soft smile. “Do people really celebrate getting out of the hospital?”
“We’re not just celebrating that,” Eugene replied with a playful wink. “We should also celebrate the fact that we’re officially together. Double the happiness!”
She laughed and nodded. “Alright, give me a few minutes.”
“Take your time.” Eugene’s gentle features lit up with an easy charm.
Sylvia disappeared into the master bedroom. Eugene lingered in the living room for a moment, then wandered out to the balcony. On her desk, he noticed an unfinished novel lying open. He picked it up and absentmindedly flipped through a few pages.
Now that they were together, he was eager to know everything about her—her routines, her tastes, her thoughts. He wanted to weave himself into her life as quickly and naturally as possible.
He ended up reading nearly a dozen pages before Sylvia emerged, changed and ready to go. “All set. Let’s head out!”
Eugene set the book down and stood up, catching sight of her in a pale blue cotton blouse, her face makeup-free, damp hair loosely tied back. The effortless look somehow made his heart skip a beat.
He wasn’t sure if it was because she was simply that beautiful, or if he’d fallen for her so deeply that in his eyes, she was beautiful no matter what.
“What is it?” Sylvia noticed him staring and wondered if something was wrong with her outfit.
“I’m just a little stunned by how gorgeous my girlfriend is,” Eugene said, his voice soft with admiration.
Sylvia still wasn’t entirely used to the change in their relationship, and she felt a little flustered. “Let’s go eat.”
She turned and headed for the door, Eugene following closely behind.
Once in the car, Eugene glanced over. “What do you feel like eating?”
Sylvia grinned. “After all those bland hospital meals, honestly, everything sounds delicious right now.”
