The office erupted with laughter, delighted squeals, and the kind of excited chatter that only a mountain of gifts could inspire.

With the most exquisite bouquet in hand, Eugene walked into Sylvia’s office and presented it to her with a warm, courteous smile. “Happy one-week anniversary to the girl I love most!”

Sylvia leaned back in her chair, a hint of a smile on her lips. “If you keep this up, I’ll have to ban you from coming here.”

Eugene grinned, all innocence. “Why? You can see for yourself—every time I stop by, your coworkers are over the moon!”

Sylvia stood, smoothing out her skirt. “Come on, let’s grab lunch.”

They ate at a bistro across the street, where a few of Sylvia’s colleagues stopped by to greet Eugene, each one friendlier than the last.

Sylvia laughed. “If this keeps up, you might as well buy out my company.”

Eugene’s gaze softened. “I don’t want your company. I just want to trade everyone’s affection for yours alone.”

Sylvia suddenly looked up, her eyes serious. “What if, after all your effort, you end up empty-handed? Would you be disappointed? Maybe even resentful?”
