Bruce replied, “Yes, we can take off whenever you wish. You didn’t sleep at all last night—shouldn’t you rest before heading out again?”

Gab shrugged off his coat, changed into a fresh shirt, and said quietly, “Sean is coming over this afternoon. Did you think I wouldn’t know what he’s up to?”

Bruce hesitated for a moment and lowered his voice. “Are you leaving in such a rush because you’re afraid Sean will stir up trouble, sir? Or… is there someone in C Country you want to see?”

Gab paused, his hand resting on his holster, then turned to look at Bruce.

Bruce immediately bowed his head. “I’ve overstepped, sir!”

Gab continued dressing, calm and unruffled. “You’re not wrong. I want to see my grandfather.”

With his head still lowered, Bruce raised an eyebrow out of Gab’s sight.

“I’m leaving now. If Sean shows up, tell him to turn around and go home. I don’t want any unnecessary drama,” Gab said, heading for the door. “Call me if there’s something urgent—but don’t make trouble if there isn’t!”

Bruce followed him out. “Understood, sir!”

Even if Sean tried to start something and demand Gab’s return, they’d have to wait until things settled down on his end. No matter what, they couldn’t disturb their revered Mr. Gab while he was busy courting a woman—not after what happened last time. The mood swings he’d brought back with him those first few days… no one wanted to live through that again.

Sensing something amiss, Gab suddenly stopped and shot Bruce a cold look.
