The party was over. Emily and Estelle were dialing Charlie's number outside the hotel.
Ever since Charlie took Kya away at noon, Emily hadn't seen Kya or known where Charlie had taken her.
Just as the phone rang for the fourth or fifth time, a luxury car suddenly pulled up. The window rolled down, revealing Charlie's handsome face. "No need to call. Hop in!" he said.
At the same time, Kya popped her head out the back window and called, "Mom, Estelle!"
Estelle waved at her, asking, "Did you have fun?"
Kya flashed her row of pearly teeth in a grin and pulled a candy out of her pocket, handing it to Estelle. "I saved this one for you!"
"Thanks, sweetheart!" Estelle said, grinning as she accepted the candy.
Charlie laughed lightly, "You two have quite a sweet tooth, huh? I guess I'll have to buy more candies next time!"
"Thanks, Charlie!" Estelle replied with a smile. "I'll get going now. Can you give Emily a ride home?"
"That's what I'm here for!" Charlie responded with a gentle smile.
Feeling a bit awkward, Emily said her goodbyes to Estelle and got in the car.
Jonathan's car was just up ahead. Estelle waved at him and walked toward his car.
Once in the car, Jonathan looked back and chuckled, "I thought Charlie and Emily had a falling out. Seems like everything's fine now."
"Yeah, I feel relieved too!" Estelle responded, waving him over, "Jonathan, come here!"
Hearing her say his name, Jonathan felt his heart skip a beat. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper, "What's up?"
He had shared the fruity candy with her just now, and now only a little was left. The candy had a faint fruity aroma and tasted sweet.
In the car ahead, Charlie had just started the car, and Kya was bouncing with excitement in the back seat. She told Emily about the amazing old lady she'd met. They'd caught a squirrel together and even seen an injured bird.
Surprised, Emily asked Charlie, "Did you take her to the zoo?"
"No, we were just in the hotel garden. The gardener keeps some small animals there," Charlie replied with a smile.
Understanding dawned on Emily. She had indeed seen some birds in the garden, and even a couple of peacocks.
"Mom, the sparrow was taken away by granny. She said she'll give it to me once its injury heals," Kya recounted earnestly, trying to explain everything so Emily would understand.
"Wait, who's granny?" Emily asked, a smile playing on her lips.
