Emily hung out with Kya for a bit then took her back to the lounge. In the corridor, a kid suddenly dashed by, knocking into Kya and sending her helium balloon flying.
Kya was mad about that balloon, so she bolted after it in a heartbeat. Emily trailed behind her all the way to the second floor, before they managed to snatch it back. Now Kya didn’t want to leave. She stood by a white marble railing, playing with the colorful ribbons and flowers on it.
Emily plonked herself down on a chair nearby, watching Kya play. Downstairs was the banquet hall where the ceremony was to take place in the afternoon. Right now, though, there were only a few people chatting, the rest probably off grabbing a bite in the restaurant next door.
A server sauntered over, bringing Emily a glass of juice and a glass of milk, plus two desserts that kids went nuts for.
Kya was having a blast, plucking off flower petals and playing with them by the railing.
Emily shot a message to Estelle, letting her know where she and Kya were and telling her to go ahead and eat without them.
Behind Emily was a small lounge area, separated by a semi-open screen.
Right now, a few ladies were chatting behind the screen.
Emily didn’t notice at first, until she heard a lady calling from behind her, “Mrs. James, come sit with us!”
“I’ve been looking for you guys. I didn’t realize you were chilling here!” Mrs. James came over, her voice warm and carrying an air of elegance and class.
Mrs. James chuckled and explained, “I was outside enjoying the fresh air.”
Emily glanced over her shoulder, through the semi-transparent screen, and sure enough, there was Charlie’s mum, settling down on the sofa. The others flocked around her, pouring her tea and handing her cake.
Mrs. James took a sip of her tea, chuckling, “I saw Josiah and Charlie together earlier. No clue where they’ve disappeared to now.”
Flora laughed, “Mrs. James, what kind of daughter-in-law are you looking for? Tell me what you want and I’ll keep an eye out for Charlie.”
“A girl like Amiee would be perfect. She’s steady, elegant, and beautiful. Most importantly, our families are on the same level.” Mrs. James emphasized the last point, “A girl like that would truly love Charlie, and will not be after anything else.”
“Mrs. James, you are right!” Mrs. Lee, who had been joking earlier, said, “My relative’s son dated a poor girl. She was beautiful but greedy and materialistic. It started with buying bags and jewelry, then cars and houses, and finally she wanted a job and a house for her brother to get married! It was too much for their family and they planned to break up, but do you know what happened? They couldn’t even break up. The girl’s family caused a scene at his company and home every day, claiming their daughter was pregnant and demanding 5 million dollars for an abortion, or they would expose everything.”
Mrs. Lee shook her head dramatically, “It was a huge mess. It drove my relative up the wall, not only costing them money but also their dignity.”
The others expressed their sympathy. Mrs. James looked even more serious, “That’s why Charlie can’t get involved with poor girls. Once they get their claws into him, he wouldn’t be able to shake them off. If Charlie dares to date a girl like that, I might as well cut ties with him!”
Flora laughed, “Alright, it’s not that serious!”
