After breakfast, she and Emily hit the road, giving Emily a ride to Charlie James' company on the way.
"Hey, what time did you get home last night?" Emily asked curiously.
Estelle had told Emily she won't be joining her for dinner because she had some stuff to deal with. She didn't tell Emily when she got back, worried it'd freak her out.
"Got home around 11. Had a long meeting."
"I made a midnight snack for you, but I was so tired I fell asleep," Emily said regretfully.
"You don't have to wait for me if I'm coming home late."
Emily was checking her phone and saw a news piece about a serious knife-related hostage situation outside the Midnight Bar last night. A girl had stepped in and saved the hostage.
The news had a picture of the scuffle taken by a passerby. It was pretty dark, so the picture was blurry and all one could see were dark figures.
The comments were full of praise for the girl who stepped in. One person said he was there and claimed the girl was able to send people flying with a kick. The scene was like something out of an action movie. The thugs with knives didn't even get a hit on her. They were crying out, making everyone's blood boil!
The comments were all over the place, filled with praises and requests for a clear picture of the girl.
"Where did you go last night?" Emily suddenly asked Estelle.
"Midnight Bar."
"Did you see this?" Emily showed Estelle the news story.
Estelle took a glance and replied coolly, "Nope!"
Emily eyed Estelle suspiciously, scanning her up and down, "You sure it wasn't you?"
"Absolutely not! No worries!" Estelle replied with a smirk.
Emily looked at the picture again. It was blurry, probably had some sort of filter on it. The girl was surrounded by a bunch of people, so one couldn't see anything clearly.
When she thought about his fading smile, she felt stifled. If he hated her this much, why keep her around?
Suddenly, her phone rang, disturbing the silence of the elevator. She quickly took it out, frowned at the caller ID.
"Dr. Martin?"
A voice came from the phone, "Have you started work yet? There's a hilarious comedy on in the theaters. It's Friday, let's go watch it tonight."
A few days ago, Dr. Martin had called Emily. He knew she had found a job and decided not to return to Oakdale City.
Before Emily could respond, Charlie turned around, leaned against the elevator wall, and bent down, cornering Emily. His gaze was warm and handsome, a mix of teasing and indifference, as if he wanted to see Emily squirm.
Emily was pressed against the elevator wall, her eyes wide open, shocked into silence.
On the phone, Dr. Martin asked, "Emily, did you hear me?"
