Charlie took a bite, mulling over the taste in his mouth. The familiar flavor brought on a hint of sadness.
Emily, with her fork, meticulously separated the fish bones.
Charlie, gazing into her beautiful eyes, asked, "You're getting used to the work environment here? Are you okay?"
Emily looked up at him and calmly replied, "I'm fine; everything's good."
Charlie chuckled, "Take it easy; it's still break time; no need to be so uptight."
Emily continued deboning the fish and softly replied, "I'm telling the truth."
"If there's anything bothering you, feel free to let me or Tracy know. Don't keep it all bottled up. I don't want my employees to carry around a bunch of pent-up emotions."
"If there is, I'll say something," Emily responded with a small nod and smile.
Charlie was taken aback by her smile; his expression momentarily stiffened before he asked, "How's Kya doing?"
Emily paused; she didn't look up. "She's good."
"Has she mentioned me?"
"Maybe, I guess."
"What do you mean, maybe?" Charlie frowned.
Emily bit her lip, not responding. Charlie seemed to be having one of his mood swings again.
"Who's taking care of her while you're at work?" Charlie asked impatiently.
"Still, Ms. Simmons," Emily replied, head still down.
Charlie gave her a look and finally shut up.
They quietly enjoyed their meal. Emily pushed the deboned fish towards him and began eating her own.
Charlie looked at the fish, his anger slowly subsiding.
But after a day of interaction, she realized that wasn't the case.
He was focused at work, adept at managing complex issues in meetings, and displayed true leadership. He was decisive, quick to act, and a truly competent leader.
Hence, the senior management of the company respected and obeyed him.
Setting aside their personal history, she too held him in high regard!
Charlie looked at her, the setting sun casting a warm glow on his face. He raised an eyebrow and asked, "What are you waiting for, not heading home?"
Emily snapped out of her reverie, her ears slightly red. She quickly nodded and said, "I'm leaving now!"
"How are you getting home?" Charlie asked.
"I'll take the subway; it's convenient," Emily chuckled.
"Take my car," Charlie nonchalantly offered before heading out.
