Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 479

Her speech seemed confident on the surface, but it betrayed a certain pettiness. Her true nature was something she couldn't hide.

Over the years, the old couple had become sharp judges of character.

They just couldn't understand what Sebastian was thinking, or why he was so captivated by this woman.

After presenting the gifts to the old man, Bella turned to Mrs. Blake.

Even though she was plotting to have Debbie replace her, she didn't let her attitude seem perfunctory. Mrs. Blake played along, but she truly couldn't stand Bella.

Sebastian tried to mediate as they all sat down to eat.

During the meal, Sebastian brought up the topic of marriage directly, stating his intention to hold a large, public wedding.

At that, the old man slammed his fork down on the table.

"A public wedding? How would you make it public? And what exactly would we say about her background?"

As soon as he said it, Mrs. Blake tried to intervene. "Honey, don't get so worked up. Think about your health."

The old man reined himself in slightly, but his expression was still thunderous.

Bella was mortified. The old man's words had hit a nerve.

Her background?

She really didn't have one. It was neither distinguished nor presentable.

She could say she was the Mercer family's stepdaughter, but the Mercers were a shadow of their former selves.

Their glory days were long gone. Besides, she wasn't a true daughter of the Mercer family.

She gave him a small, grateful smile.

The old man's words had been deeply humiliating and had put her in an impossible position.

However, Sebastian's defense was about to send his father into a rage. Mrs. Blake cut in first. "Alright, that's enough. Why are we talking about such unpleasant things? Honey, let's just eat. Please. It's a rare weekend when Sebastian isn't working. Let's just have a nice meal.

Sebastian, you too. Just eat and talk a little less."

It was obvious that the old man wasn't listening to a word Sebastian said.

More importantly, not only was he deaf to the praise, but he was also starting to see Bella as being exactly like her mother—skilled at manipulating men.

This inexplicably reminded him of Sebastian's biological mother, that vile, scheming woman.

He was filled with regret. Why had he let her trick him, resulting in this son, forever tainted by Debbie's flawed DNA!
