Emily muttered under her breath, "But what about her share of the allowance? If she stays to go to school, we lose that money..."
It suddenly clicked for Ethan. The only reason they didn't want Dolores going to school was that they were terrified of losing her cut of the promised allowance.
Ms. Mercer had thrown a massive sum of money at these bloodsuckers to get rid of them, but it had only fueled their disgusting greed. They truly were parasites through and through.
"You don't need to worry," Ethan said coolly. "Ms. Mercer is a woman of her word. The money will be paid exactly as promised. Any child who wants to study can study. And any child who wants to go abroad will still go abroad."
Mr. Bennett pulled his daughter aside and whispered, "If that's the case, let the brat go to school. If she actually amounts to something and ends up like her Auntie Bella, she can bring honor and money to the family later on. Otherwise, who's going to support us in our old age?"
Emily considered this and realized he made a solid point. If they didn't have someone in the younger generation raking in cash to fund their lavish lifestyle, the gravy train would eventually derail. With that logic in mind, Emily agreed without a second thought.
Still, she shot Dolores a look of pure disdain, her tone as venomous as ever. "Listen here, you little freak. You're the one choosing not to go on this vacation, so don't you dare complain later that we left you behind. I'll let you stay and study, but don't even dream about touching your share of that monthly allowance. Every single cent comes straight to me. Do you hear me?"
They had each been handed wads of cash earlier, so they foolishly assumed Lillian would just hand-deliver stacks of bills to them every month. Emily was determined to make sure her daughter didn't see a dime of it.
Dolores was exceptionally obedient—whether out of natural maturity or sheer terror, it was hard to tell. Keeping her head bowed, she quickly promised, "I will. I won't keep a single penny. I'll give it all to you and my brother."
