“What are you talking about, Mr. Mercer?”
“Five years ago. The International Math League’s Gold Medal Championship. Whose victory did you steal? Do you dare say it out loud?”
Patrick’s words sent a shockwave through the crowd.
“What? Marie’s championship was stolen? She was hailed as Eldoria City’s once-in-a-century math genius because of that win!”
“That competition is also what made people call her the most dazzling socialite after the late Rose Everhart, the most celebrated socialite of her generation.”
“Could it be fake? Is that why she never entered the mathematics field again after that one win? Was it all just to pad her resume?”
Listening to the murmurs, Marie snapped, “You’re all so fickle! He says one thing and you immediately doubt me. What proof does he have that my championship was stolen? Even if he’s a Fellow of the National Academy, I’ll sue him for slander.”
She couldn’t afford to look weak. Marie’s demeanor was fierce.
Hanley was even angrier. “Sir, you’re the youngest Fellow of the Aurelis National Academy and responsible for numerous important inventions. I used to admire you, but now I see you’re just a liar. Please leave. You’re not welcome at my birthday party.”
The other children grew indignant. “How can you be so rude to Patrick? That’s going too far!”
Hanley was stunned by the public outcry. He had underestimated Patrick’s standing.
