“Hanley, you don’t get to decide who the champion is,” Lucas said with a smile. “You think your family can still pull strings? Please, your family couldn’t even get you into the gifted program.”
The other children laughed, and Hanley’s face burned with humiliation.
“Shut up! My aunt’s record is public. You can look it up online; she’s won championships before. She just didn’t participate this time, which is the only reason my mommy was lucky enough to win. If my aunt had competed, my mommy wouldn’t have stood a chance.”
Marie added smugly, “I stopped participating in competitions like this a long time ago. After all, I’m the heiress to the Ward Group. Winning one math championship was enough to prove my intelligence. I don’t need to bother with academic research.”
Hanley declared, full of self-righteousness, “You hear that? My aunt is the real champion. She didn’t compete, so even though my mommy won, it was just a fluke. The real gold medalist is right here.”
As Hanley boasted, Marie lifted her chin proudly. He couldn't stand seeing Natalie in the spotlight.
Lucas couldn’t watch anymore. How could someone be so dense?
He refused to see how brilliant his own mother was, choosing instead to suck up to the other woman.
“Hanley, your aunt didn’t participate in this competition, so she couldn’t have won first place. The winner is Natalie, your mom. Why do you keep putting her down for being a stay-at-home mom? She did that for you. It’s a sacrifice, not a weakness to be attacked. Can’t you just admit that she’s amazing?”
Lucas’s words were sharp and clear. Hanley felt a sting of shame but stubbornly retorted, “I’m just being objective! I’m afraid her lie will be exposed. People will find out she cheated to get first place, and there will be consequences. Not everyone deserves to win. Only someone with a Ph.D. from a top university, or someone like my aunt who has a history of winning, is qualified.”
“Hanley’s right,” Marie said coldly. “If something isn’t yours, you shouldn’t use underhanded methods to take it.”
With that, Marie looked at Patrick. “I’m surprised someone could manipulate an international competition. Quite the powerful man, indeed.”
