“Who is it?”
At a time like this, who would be coming to see Grace Lockwood? Mrs. Lockwood was anxious, saying they didn’t have time.
Her son had said something important had come up and that they needed to go over immediately, or they would regret it.
Just then, the woman walked in. She was wearing an emerald green dress and carried an air of triumph as she approached.
“Grace, it’s been many years. You’re as radiant as ever.”
Hearing the person address Grace Lockwood so familiarly by her first name was a bit puzzling. Grace stared intently at the woman before her, Daphne.
Her brow furrowed. “Who are you?”
“It’s me, Daphne, Grace. Have you forgotten me?”
“You’re Daphne?” Grace exclaimed, grabbing Daphne’s hands. “Daphne, it really is you! We haven’t seen each other in fifty years. I never thought we’d meet again.”
Daphne said, “That’s right, Grace. It’s been fifty years.”
“Are you doing well?”
“I’m doing very well. I just returned from Marentis. I’ve been living there all these years.”
“You went abroad? You told me you were going to get married. You left in such a hurry. I only had time to give you a little money. I wanted to meet your husband in person and tell him to treat you well for the rest of your life, but you hid him so well, refusing to let me see him.”
