After running several tests at the hospital, the results came in: she had acute mastitis.
The unfamiliar term didn't make sense to Janina. Her milk had already dried up, so how could she get mastitis?
After giving birth, she had wanted to breastfeed her babies. But the twins were premature and had to be placed in incubators immediately. During that time, seeing them covered in tubes and wires, she'd been sick with worry.
She used a breast pump whenever she was engorged, hoping she could breastfeed them once they were out. But after a month of formula, the babies had grown accustomed to the bottle and rejected her milk.
Eventually, she had no choice but to take medication to stop her lactation.
It had been two weeks since then.
Last night, she'd felt a sudden fullness in her chest. At first, she thought nothing of it, assuming it was just general discomfort from a cold. Now, the doctor was telling her there was still milk trapped inside, which had caused a blockage, a fever, and ultimately, mastitis.
"How is that possible?" she murmured, her voice full of disbelief. Her milk had been gone for two weeks, and now it was suddenly back…
"Don't worry, this is quite common," the doctor said casually, typing at his keyboard. "Just make sure to drain the milk completely when you get home. I'll prescribe something for you to apply as a compress, and you'll be fine."
He continued, "Alright, the prescription is ready. It's a 50% magnesium sulfate solution. Soak some gauze in it and apply it as a cold compress two to three times a day for twenty minutes each. You should feel better in a few days."
The doctor made it sound like no big deal, but Janina was still worried. She felt awful, a discomfort that started in her chest and spread through her entire body.
"Doctor, this area feels swollen, but it doesn't hurt. Are you sure it's mastitis?" she couldn't help but ask.
It wasn't that she distrusted him, but her symptoms just didn't seem to fit. She had looked up mastitis online, and her fever felt inexplicable.
