Natalie knew something was wrong.
"Janina, it's been three days. The fever keeps coming back, and the swelling hasn't gone down at all. Do you think the doctors misdiagnosed you?" Natalie asked, her heart aching as she looked at Janina's exhausted face.
Janina sighed, her eyes full of weariness. "I'll see how it is tomorrow. If it's not better, I'll try another hospital."
She picked up her phone and vented her frustration and confusion in The Graces' Chat. Her friends immediately chimed in with advice, suggesting she go to Mercy General Hospital.
Janina was reluctant to go. She knew Yvonne Moore was also being treated there. But Mercy General had a better reputation, and for the sake of her health, she had no other choice.
The next day, Janina dragged her weak body to Mercy General. After another round of tests, the result was the same: acute mastitis.
Fortunately, the doctor noticed how unusual her case was and admitted her for observation. Normally, mastitis would gradually improve with compresses and regular draining of the milk. But Janina had been doing that for three days with no improvement, which struck the doctor as odd.
With Grace and Ethan at home taking care of the twins, Natalie was the one who stayed with Janina at the hospital. Worried the hospital food wouldn't be to Janina's liking, Grace cooked meals every day for Natalie to pick up.
West Holt would stop by to relieve Natalie when he had time, but as her brother, he felt awkward about what she was dealing with, so he never stayed long.
Her three best friends would come by after work to keep her company and lift her spirits.
