Finally able to breathe, Finch slammed back against the wall of the pit. Damp earth fell on him as he collapsed, landing right on top of the snakes and rats. He pushed himself up with his hands.
As the mix of cold scales and furry bodies brushed against his palms, he instinctively snatched his hands back and scrambled to his feet.
A powerful will to survive drove him to reach up, trying to claw his way out.
Each time he made a little progress, a foot from Kenneth or one of the women would kick him back down, sending him tumbling back into his personal hell.
"I was wrong! Please, forgive me! I'll get on my knees and beg Wendy for forgiveness! I'll do anything, just please, get me out of here!"
Finch begged, his voice cracking with tears.
He tried to climb again, and again, he was mercilessly kicked back down.
He knew with chilling certainty that if he didn't get out of this pit tonight, he would become food for these snakes and rats.
He didn't know what that bitch Janina had poured on him, but he was sure the liquids controlled the animals.
If the chemicals evaporated or wore off, the snakes and rats would attack him again.
He didn't want to die.
And if he had to, he didn't want to die like this.
"Just kill me! Give me a quick death, I'm begging you!"
His strength was gone. He couldn't climb anymore. All he could do was lean against the pit wall, hugging himself and letting out agonized sobs.
Seeing he had no fight left, Maggie clicked her tongue.
"You can't take this much? I guess the members of the Obsidian Circle aren't so tough after all. Just a twisted cult acting like you're saints. You've got no stamina, no guts."
Melody walked over to Maggie's side and glanced into the pit, a shiver running down her spine. She had kept her distance before, but now, seeing the dense mass of snakes and rats, her skin crawled.
