A Second Life, A New Power novel Chapter 370

"Mr. Daniel, I'd advise against it. Standing still might feel manageable, but walking while carrying someone? That's nearly impossible," Richard cautioned with a smile.

Daniel waded back to shore and nodded in reluctant agreement. Leaning close to Ana, he murmured, "Maybe you should sit this one out."

Ana had always been delicate and prone to chills, even in adulthood. At home, the family wouldn't let her near cold water or eat cold food. And this freezing river? Daniel was worried Ana could not tolerate the cold.

"Anyone having second thoughts may withdraw now," Richard announced, scanning the group.

16 heads shook in unison, Ana's included.

"Then, let's begin!" Richard gestured toward the cave's gaping mouth.

As the team began to strategize how to cross the cave safely, Daniel kept trying to persuade Ana to drop out of the challenge.

After the discussion, the group decided to form two chains, linking hands as they entered. Each woman would be positioned between two men for protection, one in front and one behind.

The team would be split according to last week's grouping. With their formations set, both teams began their cautious advance.

As expected, Ana refused to withdraw.

In Demi's group, George took the lead position, followed by Demi, then Felix, Maria, Chad, Wendy, Nigel, and finally Connor.

In Herne's group, Herne took the lead position, followed by Caitlin, Ollie, Vivian, Cody, Thomas, Ana, and Daniel.

The river's current was fierce. The icy water rose to the women's knees, and its powerful flow was easily strong enough to knock over anyone of slight build.

Like foals testing unfamiliar waters, both teams picked their way carefully across the riverbed, searching for secure footholds beneath the churning surface.

Fatigue set in quickly at the 20-minute mark.
