She wanted to call Lucian. Nearly a day had passed, and he must have been frantically searching for her.
The old lady shook her head, mumbling something that Allison could barely catch. The village was pretty much left to the elderly, with hardly any means of communication. The old woman had one of those senior-friendly cell phones, but it was broken. To get in touch with her kids, she’d have to trek to the small general store in town.
She pointed Allison and Katherine down a path, saying it would lead straight to town. Grateful, they thanked her and set off.
“I’m from Northfield. How about you, Allison?” Katherine asked to break the monotony of the long and tiresome walk.
“Northfield, too,” Allison replied.
Katherine’s eyes lit up. “No way! Once we’re back, we’ve got to hang out. It’s like fate brought us together.”
Allison smiled, “Sounds good. Dinner’s on me.”
They were in the suburbs now. The path was rough and uneven. Factories and steel mills flanked the road, making the place feel desolate. They instinctively tightened their grips on each other’s hands.
Katherine scanned their surroundings, on high alert. Even the faintest sound of a vehicle could send them into a panic.
“Allison, do you think... do you think they’ll come after us?” Katherine’s voice trembled.
Allison bit her lip, “That’s why we need to hurry.”
