Year Five The Perfect Goodbye Plan novel Chapter 153

Silvia’s sudden change of heart took everyone in the room by surprise.

A few officers stared at her, confusion etched across their faces.

Hadn’t everything already been explained to her? Frankly, the other party was mentally ill—pursuing charges would be pointless.

The lead detective, a woman in a crisp navy suit, stepped forward and regarded Silvia with a furrowed brow. “Miss Ashford, I went over the facts with you earlier. If you—”

“Yes, I understand,” Silvia cut in, her tone even. “But I won’t settle.”

She offered a small, cool smile, her gaze landing squarely on Amy.

“And what does the Chief think of my decision?” she asked.

Amy was silent for a long moment.

Now it dawned on the other officers—Silvia and Amy knew each other, and from the sound of it, they were colleagues. Wasn’t that all the more reason to resolve things quietly? Why was Silvia making this so difficult?

“Silvia, I know you think I’m too hard on you, and you’re not happy with me. But this is business, not personal. Can you please calm down?” Amy tried, her voice weary.

Silvia’s desire to press charges was a mountain to climb, and Amy knew it. Grady’s illness complicated everything, and Amy’s warning was really just an attempt to keep things from spiraling out of control.

Silvia’s lips curled into a faint smile. She narrowed her eyes, then asked quietly, “You’re right—it’s business. Grady’s condition makes prosecution nearly impossible. But... what if he hit me on purpose that day?”

Her voice was soft, but her words hung in the air.

The officers exchanged bewildered glances. Grady was unstable; even if he had hit her, what did it matter? His emotions were unpredictable—hadn’t Silvia just witnessed it herself?

“Silvia, don’t make this harder than it needs to be. Let’s just leave it at that,” Amy said again, exasperation flickering in her eyes. She looked as if she was out of ways to reason with her.
