Year Five The Perfect Goodbye Plan novel Chapter 140

He waited for Silvia to hang up.

Staring at the phone’s busy screen, Kent grabbed his car keys and headed to the hospital.

He wasn’t about to let Nannie run wild again—not after last time. He needed to keep her from bursting in on Silvia or having another episode in public. Not this time. Kent made sure she wasn’t going anywhere.

Just like before, he arranged for someone to keep watch outside her hospital room.

When Kent pushed open the door, Nannie was perched on the hospital bed, swinging her legs restlessly. The moment she saw him, her face lit up with a bright, innocent smile. She hurried to meet him, reaching out as if she might pull him closer.

“Kent, you came to see me so late?” she said, her voice soft and pleading, her smile sweet and almost childlike. “I don’t want to stay here anymore. Can you please let me go home?”

Her words trailed off into a gentle whine, her expression tinged with wounded vulnerability.

The constant beeping of medical monitors filled the room, never giving her a moment’s peace.

She was trapped in this tiny space; her whole world had shrunk to the four walls of this room. Nannie was going stir-crazy.

She noticed the tension in Kent’s face and huffed, turning away. “Before she showed up, you’d at least let me take a walk, get some fresh air. Now that she’s here, you’re breaking your promise and locking me up. It’s not fair.”

Nannie was a completely different person from the frantic, unstable girl she’d been just that afternoon. Now she was all pouting and innocence, as if the earlier madness had never happened.

Kent watched her small, stubborn back, his gaze growing steely. “Nannie, I’ll promise you this much: I won’t have you sent away again—this time. But if you pull another stunt just to get me running over here, I won’t hesitate to throw you out for good.”

“Throw me out?!” Nannie’s voice suddenly sharpened. She echoed his words, then after a beat, started laughing. “Kent, you’re all I have in this world. Where else would I go?”
