Year Five The Perfect Goodbye Plan novel Chapter 289

Finn and Lola fixed their eyes on Vianne, suspicion and distrust plain in their expressions. Vianne faced their scrutiny alone, her posture steady as she met their gaze.

The living room suddenly felt colder, a heavy silence settling over them. After a moment, Vianne broke it with a cheerful smile. “Auntie, I just wanted to come home, that’s all. There’s nothing else going on.”

Lola stared at her, eyes unblinking. Then, in a pointed tone, she asked, “If you knew that Silvia and Shipley were together before, why did you get involved with him?”

Vianne didn’t answer immediately. The question seemed to sting. She gazed directly at Lola, as if she’d been wronged, her silence stretching out.

Finally, Vianne spoke, her voice soft. “Auntie, Shipley and I are truly in love. We’ve known each other since we were kids. You and Finn both know that.”

That much was true. Shipley’s family was middle-class, running a small business, but they’d always been close to Finn’s family. Finn used to invite Shipley over all the time when they were children. Back then, he hadn’t realized Vianne had feelings for Shipley.

“But you left for years, you went abroad…” Lola shook her head, her sympathy for Silvia plain on her face. She thought of her own daughter, chasing after Shipley all the way to Luminova City and suffering for it. The thought made her ache.

Hearing this, Vianne hurried to explain, her voice trembling a little. “Auntie, that’s not how it was. When I left for New York, Shipley promised he’d wait for me. It was Silvia who couldn’t let go of him—she was the one who went after him.”
