Carmen picked out her room and unpacked her clothes, putting everything neatly away in the wardrobe. By the time she finished, it was nearly ten. She slipped into the bathroom, feeling rare motivation to take a long bath. Sometimes, a good mood just had to be made by yourself. From now on, she decided, she’d do her best to keep things civil and polite with Pearson.
Pearson was just getting home, his blue dress shirt making him look sharper than usual, though his cheeks were still a little red from the drinks at his business dinner. He’d meant to send Carmen a text to let her know he’d be late, but then realized they hadn’t even exchanged numbers. Scrolling through his phone, he found her contact and sent her a friend request on WeChat.
The entire ride home, he waited for her to accept, but she never did. Was she upset? He tried to guess what Carmen was thinking.
When Pearson was younger, he’d only ever focused on school. After starting work, he threw himself into long hours, earned a few promotions, and finally landed his current role by his thirties. His family tried everything to get him to settle down, but he always brushed it off, never too interested in romance.
But now, being in his position, he knew he needed something stable. So when the Clark family suggested the match, he agreed. He’d known from the start that Carmen was young and headstrong, and not a fan of the arrangement. At their first blind date, she made no effort to hide her disinterest, pointing out every little flaw to try and scare him off.
Somehow though, he just found her adorable. Later, when his parents asked how it went, he surprised everyone—including himself—by saying he was willing to give it a shot.
When Carmen found out he’d agreed, she called, furious, demanding to know what he was thinking. Pearson stayed calm as ever. “Carmen, I think we could really work. Why not try?”
He even asked Scott for tips on chasing a girl, but Scott just shrugged and said his wife had confessed first. Both of the Stephens brothers had a knack for being affectionate.
Just when Pearson thought it would take ages to win her over, Carmen unexpectedly agreed to register their marriage. At the registry office, she kept her face so serious that the clerk actually asked her if she was really doing it of her own free will.
Pearson couldn’t help but laugh quietly, deciding it would be best to take things slow so he wouldn’t scare her off completely.
Later, when he noticed the master bedroom was empty, his first thought was that Carmen might have run off already. Buena stepped out, spotted him, and jumped in with an explanation. “Pearson, Carmen is in the guest room.”
