When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 385

Carmen was the little princess in her family, but luckily, she didn't act like one. She’d learned her lesson early, back in middle school, after a friend betrayed her. That was when Carmen realized a lot of the friendships in her social circle were nothing but smoke and mirrors. People buddy up because of your family's reputation, not because they really care about you.

Carmen wanted something real, so her closest friend, her ride or die, was Dorothea, a total outsider from their world.

She studied directing in college, then kept things low-key, working at her cousin Simon’s company. Nobody there knew her background. She started at the bottom as an assistant and slowly worked her way up to director.

After spending time in the entertainment industry, she’d pretty much stopped believing in true love. Relationships in showbiz were a mess. The couples the public obsessed over? Half of them were fighting behind the scenes, their teams at each other’s throats. Even the married couples in the industry barely pretended to keep up appearances. So Carmen didn’t expect much from any of it.

By the time she was twenty-six, her family was driving her crazy about settling down. That’s when they introduced her to her “arranged” fiancé, Pearson.

Pearson was basically the dream son-in-law from a parent’s perspective. He was the youngest department director in the city, calm, reliable, and his reputation was spotless. Carmen had never heard a single rumor about him.

But she couldn’t help feeling suspicious. Nobody was that perfect. From their first meeting, Carmen had her guard up.

The day they got their marriage certificate, her grandpa wasted no time. He sent someone to pack Carmen’s things and take them straight to the apartment she was supposed to share with Pearson.

She stared at her grandfather, totally at a loss. “Grandpa, whose grandpa are you? Mine or Pearson’s?”

Jarrett gave her an amused look. “Does it matter? Pearson is my grandson-in-law now. That makes me his grandpa too.”

“That’s it. You’re all married up. I’ve arranged for the driver to take you to Pearson’s place.”
