When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 333

Mamie pressed her lips together, unsure what to say to the man in front of her who was acting completely out of line.

“Let’s just go home. If we’re late, Garth will worry,” she said quietly.

“You only care about him. When are you ever going to care about me?” Scott shot back so quickly that Mamie almost missed it.

The second the words were out, regret flickered across his face. He had promised himself after their breakup that he would never look back. She was the one who left. He had his pride, and he swore he would never beg her to come back.

But when it was actually over, it was Mamie’s words that haunted him: I never loved you. No matter what he told himself, they echoed in his mind, over and over. He couldn’t let go. He went to the orphanage and brought their child home. And the minute she came back to the country, he found excuses to be near her again.

When he heard she had broken off her engagement, he felt a rush of happiness he couldn’t explain. And when she discovered she was Garth’s mother, the first thing he thought was that they finally had the perfect reason to be together. Latham had been right. Mamie was the only woman he had ever truly wanted.

Scott’s voice softened. “We’re married, Mamie. We’re not enemies. If you need anything, you can just ask me. There’s no need to go to anyone else.”

Mamie chewed her lip, finally making up her mind.

“You know I lost my memory. But from what I’ve found, the only reason I got close to you in the first place was because Vince made me.”

Scott looked stunned. “Vince?”

He had never connected that name to their relationship. Vince was an old colleague from ten years ago. They used to be close but drifted apart when they started working in different places. The only time he’d seen Vince in recent years was when he showed up at Scott’s wedding.

“Yes,” Mamie replied. “I don’t remember what I said when we broke up, but back then, he threatened me. He used my mom’s need for a heart transplant to force me into getting close to you. I guess I couldn’t take being in such a messed-up relationship, so I broke things off. Not long after, my mom died after falling from a building. Then my dad died in a car accident. After that, I lost my memory. Everything I’ve found points back to Vince. I hired a private investigator to look into him, but Vince found out. That’s why I tried to hire a lawyer instead, hoping for another way.”

Scott just sat there, trying to take it all in.
