When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 332

Scott didn’t go back to the station after his meeting. He told Aaron to call it a day, got behind the wheel, and before he knew it, he had parked outside Mamie’s office building. He didn’t call her right away. Instead, he waited in his car, watching the time tick closer to five-thirty. Just as he was about to call her, he spotted Mamie coming out of the building. He reached for the door, wanting to call her name, but stopped as he watched her get into a black sedan. The driver was a man. Scott’s expression darkened. He rolled up his window and followed behind them.

Inside the car, Mamie smiled gratefully. “Thanks for picking me up, Tammie. Sorry to make you go out of your way.”

Her own car was getting serviced, so they’d planned to meet at a coffee shop. Tammie had finished up at a nearby courthouse and offered to give her a lift since it was on his route.

When they arrived, Mamie and Tammie walked into the café together and found a quiet spot in the corner. Scott stayed in his car, parking near the window where he could see them, just watching in silence.

Tammie spoke gently. “Mamie, the evidence you have just isn’t enough. You’re guessing at motives, but there’s nothing solid. I can’t take on this case without proof. And about your mom—if you really believed her death wasn’t a suicide, why didn’t you push the police back then?”

Mamie had checked the police records herself. It was all there in black and white—suicide. She didn’t have any real evidence.

“We’ll refund what you paid to the firm,” Tammie continued. “I’m sorry. It’s been seven years, Mamie. I think it’s time to let it go. I’m sure your mom wouldn’t want you to keep chasing this.”

Mamie felt whatever hope she’d had crumble away. She straightened up and put on a brave face, forcing a small smile as she reached out her hand. “Thank you anyway, Tammie. I appreciate it.”

Tammie smiled kindly and shook her hand. “Of course. That’s what we’re here for.”

Scott watched their hands meet, and rage simmered in his chest. Without thinking, he got out of his car and stormed into the café. He didn’t care that it was just a handshake. Jealousy burned through him anyway.

Tammie noticed immediately, freezing under Scott’s icy stare. “Mamie, do you know this guy?”

Mamie was caught off guard. She had no idea why Scott was suddenly there.
