Selina had a connection at the boutique. The new limited-edition bag Sheila had been eyeing had finally arrived today. Selina pulled a lot of strings to secure it, and Sheila was genuinely grateful.
Selina grinned, taking advantage of the moment. “If you’re really thankful, then when you marry Mr. Garland, you have to make me your maid of honor.”
Sheila ducked her head and laughed. “Come on, it’s not even close to that yet…”
“Not close? I bet you’ll be making wedding plans any day now.” Selina hooked her arm through Sheila’s, practically glowing with excitement like she was the one getting married.
She lowered her voice and got a little conspiratorial. “I heard Nelly quit her job. Is she divorcing Mr. Garland?”
Selina hadn’t been in touch with Nelly lately. She felt a little guilty about it and had even planned to bring her a gift once she got back from vacation. But Nelly hadn’t picked up her calls. When Selina stopped by the Garland house, the staff told her Nelly had moved out. She went to Garland Inc. to look for her, only to find Nelly had already resigned.
Selina’s curiosity was on fire. She asked around for ages until someone finally whispered that Nelly and Mr. Garland were headed for divorce.
When Sheila didn’t deny it, Selina felt totally justified. “See? I knew it. As soon as you came back, there was no place left for Nelly.”
“Sheila, don’t say things like that.” Sheila frowned slightly. “I wanted to see you today because I hope you can check in on Nelly a little more…”
Selina caught the hesitation and jumped right in. “Sheila, just say what you need. If there’s anything I can do, I’ll help.”
“You’re right. Brody is thinking about divorce, but I don’t want him to feel stuck or to hurt Nelly…”
Sheila looked troubled. “But I don’t know Nelly very well. Since you’re her friend, maybe you could talk to her, comfort her a little…”
Sheila’s words were careful, but Selina got it immediately.
So Nelly didn’t want to get divorced.
Sheila was probably too soft-hearted to push Nelly herself, and it wasn’t her place anyway. But Selina could step in.
“Don’t worry, Nelly’s probably just in a bad mood. She hasn’t answered my calls lately. I’ll do my best to talk to her.”
Sheila still seemed anxious. “But…”
“I won’t mention you. I wouldn't let her give you any trouble.” Selina understood what Sheila was worried about.
While they were talking, they walked into the luxury boutique. A saleswoman greeted them and led them upstairs to the VIP lounge for some tea while they waited for the bag.
Once they settled in, Selina picked up where she left off. “Honestly, I don’t know how Nelly can be so clueless.”
“Brody doesn’t even like her. Why is she hanging on like this?”
“If I were her, I’d have left a long time ago.”
She didn’t bother to lower her voice, and just on the other side of the wall, Nelly heard everything.
